In my view, there is no higher art than writing profiles and obituaries, which give insight into people and the times that shaped their lives. I have written many of the obits of major political figures for the Los Angeles Times -- including Ronald Reagan's. I also delight in profiling people who largely went unnoticed but whose lives provides fascinating reflections of their times, like the first female American spy.
